Typhoon Gorontalo, BNPB displaced more than 7 thousand people


Jakarta – As a result of the flood on July 10, 2024, most areas in Gorontalo City were displaced due to the flood. According to reports received by the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) on Monday, July 15, 2024, the tide will gradually recede in several regions.

Previously, the city of Gorontalo was flooded by water, the height of which was 30 to 150 centimeters.

“This is the fourth flood in July 2024. The high intensity of rainfall from 10 to 13 July 2024, combined with the geographical conditions of the basin-shaped Gorontalo region, resulted in the worst flooding in Gorontalo in mid-2024,” said BNPB Natural Disaster Data, Information and Communications Centre Head Abdul Muhari in his statement on Monday, July 15, 2024.

Abdul said 47 communities in nine districts of Gorontalo City were affected by the floods. These include West District, North City, South City, Central City, East City, Dumbo Raya, Hulontalangi, Dungingi and Sipatana. The number of flooded houses reached 4,686.

In addition to the flood, several others were affected. These include Tenilo Village (Kota West District), Pohe Village (Hulantalangi District), Leato North, Leato South, Botu and Talumolo in Dumbo Raya District. One resident of Kota-Barat District died due to a landslide.

“The Gorontalo City Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), together with the regional and inter-sectoral government, will carry out emergency response measures by evacuating residents, establishing evacuation posts and organizing public canteens, evacuating damaged public facilities and infrastructure, as well as deep removal of landslide materials and cleaning up flood debris.

Meanwhile, Abdul explained that a total of 59 refugee posts have been set up in each rural community. The total number of displaced residents by July 13, 2024 was 7,486 people.

The Mayor of Gorontalo declared a state of emergency in response to flood and landslide disasters with the number 256/6/VII/2024 for 14 days from July 11, 2024 to July 24, 2024.
