Ecuadorian television presenter and former beauty queen, Karime Borja He came face to face with the greatest tragedy of his life when he lost his four-year-old son Mateo Lajo Borja on September 17, after he spent three years in difficult conditions following a pool accident in 2021, as reported The Vanguard.
Karime Borja herself shared the sad news on her social media, where she thanked all those who were always aware of her situation and showed solidarity in some way with her and her family.
In a publication accompanied by photographs wrote: “I love you forever, Mateo,” she added, while asking for some privacy for herself in these moments of such pain.
What was the accident like for Karime Borja’s son?
According to The Vanguard, In 2021, in the month of November, little Mateo accidentally fell into the pool at his house and remained submerged in the water for 15 minutes without vital signs, which caused ischemic hypoxia that left him with serious brain injuries.
For the next three years, Mateo was hospitalized and had serious health problems. He also received treatments with which doctors tried to recover him, but nothing was achieved, and hope finally ended on Thursday, September 17.
In all these years, Karime Borja dedicated herself full-time to her son, and it was through her networks that she documented her life with her little one.
“I love taking care of you, it fills my soul to have the privilege that while you decide to continue on this earth with me, for as long as God gives us, I can hold you tight, love you, take care of you a lot and obviously make you very pretty. Thank you for making me happy in our own way, which is unique. As painful as it has been to see your hair fall out due to so much medicine… today our little hair salon made me laugh and enjoy you as I like so much. Thank you for reminding me of the meaning of love. I love you Mateo more than my own life, until eternity,” she wrote in one of many posts.
Last January the former queen also shared the following message on Instagram, According to People: “You are my whole life, my perfect complement, my heaven. I felt the most beautiful sunset of my life again because we shared it together again.” I love you with all my being, my child of light, thank you for teaching me to love like this.”
Karime Borja urged parents and caregivers to teach their children to swim, but also to keep an eye on them at all times. She asked for fences to be put around swimming pools to avoid such tragic and painful accidents as the one that happened to her son.
“I felt like my soul had been torn from my body, I can’t describe the pain,” she confessed. “I was in pieces, I thought: this isn’t real,” she said of that day, when she lived a nightmare. “I didn’t want to talk to doctors, I wanted to talk to God. His heart had started beating on its own again, Mateo was alive. Thank God he was alive, at that moment I was reborn.”
The farewell tribute to Mateo took place at dusk on September 19 at the dock of the Samborondón Historical Park and in the middle of a solemn space that was dressed in white. In the middle of nature and flowers, Mateo was bid farewell by his mother and his nurse Dayanna forever.
