A Riverside County sheriff’s deputy stabbed an inmate who tried to pull a gun from his holster during a court hearing Wednesday, authorities said.
Joseph Bashor, 20, of San Bernardino, was awaiting arraignment at the Interdiction Justice Center when officers said Bashor, who had a restraining order, was uncooperative. He took the deputy’s clay gun and tried to disarm him.
According to authorities, this MP, whose name has not been revealed, stabbed Bashar with a knife.
The sheriff’s department declined to comment on which knife was used, whether it was a police weapon or a county-issued weapon, because of the ongoing investigation.
Bashar was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and released the same day. The deputy was placed on paid administrative leave in accordance with department policy.
Bashar was booked on robbery and assault with a deadly weapon charges, and will face additional charges for attempting to disarm a law enforcement officer, authorities said. His next court date is Oct. 21, according to jail records.
