Woodball makes a successful debut at PON 2024

Aceh, Long Live – Woodball was one of the newcomers at the Aceh-North Sumatra National Sports Week (PON) XXI-2014. The competition was a success.

A total of 114 athletes from 16 provinces participated in seven tournaments, which were held at Lampuk Golf Course, Lhoknga District, Aceh Besar from 14 to 19 September 2024. The competition categories were men’s and women’s fairway team, fairway doubles, men’s single-shot – women’s and men’s double-shot – women’s.

The Central Java contingent was crowned the overall champion in the sport of woodball. They won three gold and four bronze medals. In second place is Toro with two gold, two silver and one bronze. Host Aceh is in third place with two gold medals.

“Hosting woodball at PON is not only a debut but also a historic record for this sport. I hope this can be an incentive for the woodball community in Indonesia to introduce this sport more widely and ensure Indonesia’s greatest achievements on the world stage,” said Aang Sunadji, President General of the Indonesian Woodball Association (IWbA).

“I also have to thank all the parties that made the first woodball match in PON a success, the athletes, coaches, judges, organizing committee and of course the central KON, which allowed us to organize this tournament well,” he added.

Aang said that the IWbA will continue to strive to compete in PON XXII-2028 NTT-NTB. However, it will require commitment and hard work from all parties to make this happen.

“I hope that not only in PON, woodball can also become a sport that will compete in the 2025 Sea Games in Thailand and of course, if that happens, woodball can provide the best performance for Indonesia,” Aang said.

Menpora registers 13,000 athletes in 65 sports at PON 2024 Aceh-North Sumatra

Indonesian Youth and Sports Minister Dito Ariotedjo said in his report that some 13,000 athletes compete in 65 sports.
