High Country Sinfonia announces fall performances

High Country Sinfonia will perform at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, October 18 at Christ Episcopal Church in Aspen and at 4 p.m. on Sunday, October 20 at the River Valley Ranch Old Thompson Barn in Carbondale.

The performances are part of the chamber orchestra’s fall concert series, announced Friday. Attendance at both concerts is free and the donation is $20 per person to fund the orchestra’s operating expenses and its mission of providing music in the Roaring Fork Valley, according to a news release.

The highlight of the program will be a solo performance by Kurt Kovar, a senior at Aspen High School, Class of ’25. A member of the local music community since age 7, Kovar performed Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme, Op. 32.” Kovar has participated in programs such as the Aspen Music Festival and School, the Kinhaven School of Music and the Brevard Music Center. His goal is to become a soloist after graduation.

Fall program selections include J.S. Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 6 and Antonin Dvorak’s Serenade for Strings. Each concert will be followed by a small reception allowing the public to meet the musicians and enjoy refreshments donated by Local Spirits and Paradise Bakery.

Steps to celebrate a decade of service

Stepping Stones of Roaring Fork Valley, a nonprofit, youth empowerment organization in Carbondale, is celebrating its 10th anniversary with a benefit from 5-8 p.m. on Friday, September 27 in Carbondale.

The Stepping for Youth benefit will be held at the Stepping Stones Center at 1010 Garfield Ave.

“We are excited to welcome back our youth, families, partners and community members to celebrate the incredible work of the past decade,” CEO Kyle Crowley said in a news release Friday.

According to its mission statement, Stepping Stones opened its doors in 2014 with the goal of “cultivating strong mentoring relationships and a community atmosphere for young people ages 10-24 to promote personal growth, compassion, and responsibility.”

The nonprofit now serves 360 youth each year through after-school programming, recreational and outdoor experiences, support services, multicultural opportunities and more. All proceeds from the upcoming fundraiser will go directly to these programs.

“Over the past 10 years, Stepping Stones has provided a safe place for more than 1,000 young people,” Crowley said. “Through strong relationships and comprehensive services, we have enabled these young people to thrive. We are grateful to be part of a strong community of nonprofits and a vibrant valley that works together to ensure every young person is connected to the comprehensive support they need to grow in resilience and joy.”
