Marc Maron recalls that Robert De Niro forgot his lines in 'Joker': 'It's a disaster'

Robert De Niro apparently didn’t arrive on the set of “Joker” completely off-book.

Speaking to Jason Ritter on Maron’s WTF podcast, the comedian and host shared his days on set with Robert De Niro on the set of The Joker. Maron said the legendary actor kept forgetting his lines, which helped him sound more like a real person.

“I did a scene with De Niro in ‘Joker,’ and I was really watching him because I was on set all week and he was playing a talk show host,” Maron said. “He doesn’t know his lines and they repeat it over and over. It was completely incomprehensible to me, De Niro, because I’ve watched him my whole life.”

Maron added: “He’s obviously a great actor, but they understand something – people who spend their lives in front of the camera and do it for a long time – because I’m watching and I’m like, ‘This is a mess.’ How are they going to cut it together? I knew it would all be fine. He’s been on set so many times where he’s just going to do this and do that and do that and they’ll find one.”

The comedian isn’t the only one sharing his incredible behind-the-scenes experience filming The Joker. Comedian Sam Morrill also had a small role in the film, and he explained to Howard Stern that he used his own material for his scenes.

“I think they expected me to breastfeed, so I pumped,” Morrill said. “I’m in my trailer and Todd Phillips is going through this with me, and I was like, ‘I’m at this open mic, do you want it to be like an open mic?’ You make your own jokes.”

Morrill continued: “I’m not going to bomb with my stuff; I’m not going to bomb with my stuff, I’m going to kill.”

“Joker: Folie à Deux,” the highly anticipated sequel to the R-rated DC Comics film, hits theaters October 4.
