New York magazine star Olivia Nuzzi, a Washington reporter, is on leave after it was revealed she recently had an affair with Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the magazine reported Thursday.
According to Oliver Darcy, who broke the story Thursday night, the magazine only found out about it recently, and specifically before Nuzzi revealed it.
“Our Washington correspondent Olivia Nuzzi recently admitted to the magazine’s editors that she had a personal relationship with a former subject connected to the 2024 campaign while reporting on the campaign, in violation of the magazine’s standards on conflicts of interest and disclosures,” a spokesperson said in a statement to Darcy.
“Had the magazine known of this relationship, it would not have continued to cover the presidential campaign. An internal review of his published work found no inaccuracies or evidence of bias. He is currently on leave from the magazine while it conducts a more detailed independent review. We regret this violation of the law by our students,” the statement said.
In a statement Thursday night, Nuzzi, 31, denied the relationship was ever “physical” and described it as “an interaction” that “became personal.”
“Earlier this year, the nature of some communication between a former subject of the report and myself became personal. During this time, I did not report directly on the subject or use them as a source. The relationship was never physical, but it should have been. I deeply regret not doing this immediately and apologize to those I disappointed, especially my colleagues in New York,” he said.
