Actress Shannen Doherty dies at 53. She starred on the hit series “Beverly Hills, 90210” and “Charmed” and documented her nine-year battle with breast cancer, according to her longtime publicist. “It is with great sadness that I confirm the passing of actress Shannen Doherty,” publicist Leslie Sloane said in a statement. “On Saturday, July 13, she lost her battle with cancer after many years of battling the disease. The devoted daughter, sister, aunt and friend was surrounded by loved ones and her dog, Bowie. The family asks for their privacy at this time so they can grieve in peace.”
Doherty was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015, but went into remission two years later. That relief wouldn’t last long. In February 2020, court documents from a lawsuit Doherty filed against her insurance company for damage to her home said she was “dying” from stage 4 breast cancer, which had metastasized to the point of being incurable, she reported. In June 2023, she shared an emotional Instagram post revealing that her cancer had spread to her brain earlier in the year. “It’s a bitter pill to swallow in many ways,” Doherty told Good Morning America at that moment. “There are definitely days where I’m like, ‘Why me?’ And then I’m like, ‘Well, why not me?’ Who else besides me deserves this? None of us deserve it.”
