A village chief was killed by lightning near an oil palm mine

LIVE – Sarang Giting Kahan (Kades) Village Head Joas Simanjuntak (48) was found dead after being struck by lightning at the edge of an oil palm field, Hamlet IV, Sarang Giting Kahan Village, Bintangbayu District, Serdangbedagai (Sergai) Regency, North Sumatra.

Kotarich Police Chief Inspector Mula Purba said the victim was found on Tuesday, July 9, 2024, at around 4.45 pm. Officers immediately rushed to the spot to investigate the scene and collect information from witnesses.

While investigating the scene, police found the dead body of the village head, Sarang Giting Kahan, who had been electrocuted (Kotarh police document).

Mula said on Thursday, July 11, 2024: “The victim was lying face down at the edge of the oil palm field, bleeding from the mouth and face, and his body was bruised.”

The victim’s body was taken to Bhayangkara Hospital in Tebintinggi City and arrived at around 18.45 WIB, where the hospital declared the victim dead.

The results of the autopsy by forensic experts at Bhayangkara Hospital confirmed that Joas Simanjuntak’s death was due to electrocution.

“Considering that the weather conditions were very cloudy and there was a storm at the time of the incident,” Mula said.

The victim’s relatives later took the body to the funeral home.
