China says massive pager explosion in Lebanon violates sovereignty, escalates tensions


Beijing, VIVA – China’s Foreign Ministry said the explosion of thousands of communication devices in Lebanon is a violation of independence and could increase tension in the Middle East region.

“We oppose any action that violates Lebanon’s sovereignty and security, and are concerned about the possible escalation of tensions in the region,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said at a press conference in Beijing, China, Thursday, Sept. 19, 2024.

Lebanese media believe the device was detonated after Israel hacked into the country’s communications system.

Both the Lebanese government and Hezbollah blamed Israel for the attack. Hassan Nasrallah, Hezbollah’s secretary general, even said that the number of pagers used by Hezbollah members was 4,000, meaning that Israel is deliberately planning to kill 4,000 people.

Meanwhile, local media reported that the explosive units were delivered to Lebanon five months ago, around the same time as the bomb-signaling units arrived.

Hezbollah’s decision to use pagers was due to the fact that this technology was considered the most secure against possible eavesdropping and illegal listening.

Lebanese security sources said Israel’s Mossad intelligence agency planted explosives inside. Pager which was used by Hezbollah members a few months before the explosion.

Israel has not commented on the explosion. PagerBut Hezbollah vowed to retaliate against Israel for the bombing.
