Federal court dismisses Trump classified documents case

The federal judge presiding over the case involving former President Donald Trump’s classified documents in Florida has recused himself from the prosecution over concerns about the appointment of the prosecutor who handled the case.

U.S. District Judge Eileen Cannon on Monday granted the defense’s motion to dismiss the case.

Trump’s lawyers argued that special counsel Jack Smith was illegally appointed and that his office was illegally funded by the Justice Department.

A spokeswoman for Smith and Trump’s lawyer did not immediately respond to messages seeking comment.

Eric Tucker reports for The Associated Press.
