This is the second time that Indonesia’s position has risen rapidly since being led by Shin Tae-yong, who first signed a contract in late December 2019.

When he arrived, Indonesia was ranked 173rd in the FIFA rankings, behind several ASEAN countries including Vietnam and Malaysia.

In this process, the progress experienced by the Indonesian national team was not instantaneous. He received a lot of criticism and doubts because he brought new ideas to the Indonesian national team.

Slowly but surely, the Indonesian national team’s FIFA ranking began to rise in October 2021. After defeating Chinese Taipei in the Asian Cup qualifiers, Indonesia rose to 165th place.

After that, the ranking of the Indonesian national team has been steadily rising. In April 2023, Indonesia will be ranked 149th in the FIFA rankings. These results came after a win and a draw against Burundi.

A year later, Indonesia has climbed up the rankings again. In April 2024, the Indonesian national team will be ranked 134th in the FIFA rankings. Indonesia is currently ranked 129th.

Indonesia is now behind only two ASEAN countries, namely Vietnam (116) and Thailand (100). However, the current improvement of the Indonesian team has not satisfied the PSSI.

This is because PSSI has set itself the goal of having Garuda enter the top 100 of the FIFA rankings in the future. “It is not enough, because our dream is to place Garuda among the top 100 in the world,” said PSSI president Eric Tahir.
