“There are more than 100 ex-convicts in Medan. We are involved to help maintain security so that nothing impedes the implementation of PON,” said a former convict from Medan, nicknamed Wak Geng, on Friday, September 20, 2024.

According to Wak Geng, one of the ways in which ex-convicts are involved is by talking to officers from the Indonesian Police (Polri) and the Indonesian National Army (TNI) to discuss the current security situation in and around Medan. In addition, ex-convicts regularly hold talks with the National Anti-Terrorism Agency (BNPT).

“A few days ago, the BNPT team came to inspect vital objects. They asked us and talked to us about security at Belawan Port. This is, of course, part of their security monitoring,” said the man sentenced to 12 years in prison for participating in the robbery of the CIMB Niaga bank in Medan and the attack on the Hamparan Perak Deli Serdang police in 2009.

Wak Geng also welcomed the participation of BNPT in the provision of PON in Aceh and North Sumatra. According to him, the presence of BNPT is very important to prevent terrorist acts during the implementation of PON.

“BNPT sector is definitely very positive in terms of security. They are here to protect security against terrorist acts. On the other hand, we, the ex-convicts, have also spoken within the country and guaranteed security. God willing, PON will be released without any terrorist action,” said Wak Geng.

Wak Geng then said that the implementation of PON made a great contribution to the lives of the people of North Sumatra. For example, he went on to say that PON promotes the development of sports for the younger generation and improves the economy of the people of North Sumatra.

“With PON, more young people want to come forward to make the nation proud in the sports field. In addition, PON also opens up opportunities for the community, especially traders, to make a living from visitors or tourists coming to the country. North Sumatra said
