Jakarta, VIVA – The head of the TNI Information Centre, TNI Major General Hariyanto, said that the release of the captain of the Susi plane, Philip Mark Mehrtens, was the result of good coordination between the TNI, the police and the community.

Harianto made this statement while confirming the successful release of Susi Air pilot Philip Mark Mehrtens, who was held hostage by the Free Papua Organization (FPO) for 1 year and 7 months.
“We are very grateful that the hostage, the Susi Air pilot, has been released safely,” Harianto said in a statement in Jakarta on Saturday, September 21, 2024.

Harianto explained that security forces were committed from the beginning to prioritise the safety of pilot Felipe in the effort to free him from the hostages.

He also thanked the family of pilot Philip for their support and patience during the release process. “We hope that this incident will not happen again and that all parties can work together to create a peaceful situation in Papua,” he said.
Harianto stressed that the TNI will continue to maintain security in the Papua region and ensure that actions that threaten national security and stability are addressed decisively.
